A couple of days ago, we ran an item entitled No pre-Christmas hiring boom, citing research that claimed the UK is set to have the lowest results for employer hiring intentions in the pre-Christmas fourth quarter since 1993.

So wiping away the egg dripping down our faces, we can now report that UK retailer Argos is recruiting 21,000 extra part-time staff to work in its stores over the Christmas period. This is on top of the 11,000 staff sought by fellow retailers Boots and Woolworths.

Good news in itself, but could be made even better if Argos does as it says it hopes to do and takes on some of the new recruits on a permanent basis in the new year.
