A district council in the UK is banning staff from taking cigarette breaks while they are at work.

West Lancashire District Council has approved a blanket smoking ban on in its buildings and even outside council premises. Designated smoking rooms are to be removed and the council's fleet of vehicles will come under the ban.

Staff who ignore the ban will face disciplinary action and could be fired.

The policy said employees can only smoke in their lunch breaks, "however it must take place away from council premises and buildings and outside the grounds".
