Ignorance is not bliss

UK workers are alarmingly ignorant of their employment rights, according to a poll of 1,000 people by the TUC and internet company Tiscali.

Four out of ten do not even know much holiday they are entitled to or how long they should be working. One in six thought they had no employment rights at all.

The vexed issue of the European Working Time Directive also emerged as a major issue, with one in five respondents wrongly thinking they could be forced to work more than 48 hours a week.

Two-thirds of staff also had no idea about their pension provision.
